An Intimate Wedding at Mount Tolmie, Victoria BC

Some couples dream of grand wedding venues, while others imagine something more personal: a celebration surrounded by their closest friends and family, in a place filled with familiar memories. When that place is a beautifully maintained family garden, just minutes from the scenic views of Mount Tolmie, the result can be truly special.

That was the story of Mike and Katelyn. They chose an intimate wedding in Victoria, BC, bringing together the natural beauty of the area and the warmth of celebrating at home with the people who matter most.

Relaxed Wedding Portraits at Mount Tolmie

Mike and Katelyn wanted a relaxed start to their wedding day, beginning with couple’s portraits at Mount Tolmie before joining their family for the ceremony. I met them there on a beautiful day, despite earlier weather forecasts predicting rain. A soft layer of clouds created gentle light, making it a lovely setting for their wedding photos.

Rather than rushing through a series of poses, I wanted Mike and Katelyn to feel comfortable and enjoy the experience. With some of their favorite music playing in the background, we explored the area together. They walked, twirled, smiled, and simply enjoyed being in the moment.

The golden tones of the grass, scattered flowers, and scenic views complemented the couple beautifully. The relaxed atmosphere and soft light gave us the opportunity to capture natural portraits that reflected their connection and personalities.

For me, these are some of the most rewarding moments in wedding photography: when couples can forget about the camera for a while and simply enjoy being together.

A Heartfelt Backyard Wedding in Victoria

After an hour of relaxed portraits at Mount Tolmie, it was time to head to Mike’s parents’ backyard, where their family was waiting to celebrate with them.

The garden was full of color, with roses and other flowers creating a charming setting for their intimate wedding ceremony. There was something especially meaningful about celebrating in a familiar place, surrounded by family and the memories attached to it.

The cutest little guide showed the couple the path to their ceremony….

One of the sweetest moments came when a little girl led Mike and Katelyn toward their ceremony. It was a lovely personal touch that added even more warmth to an already special occasion.

They said yes for their forever story….

The ceremony was simple and heartfelt, centered on what mattered most: two people making a commitment to each other in the presence of their closest family and friends.

After the ceremony, we took family portraits and captured more relaxed photos of Mike and Katelyn walking through the colourful garden together. With flowers all around them and their loved ones close by, the backyard offered a beautiful variety of settings without the need to travel between multiple locations.

The Beauty of an Intimate Wedding

As the formalities came to an end, the atmosphere gradually shifted into a relaxed family gathering. Laughter filled the garden, coffee and tea were close at hand, and everyone slowly eased into lunch together.

There was no rush to move from one event to the next. The day unfolded naturally, with meaningful moments happening in between the planned ones.

That is one of the things I love about intimate weddings. With a smaller guest list and a familiar setting, couples have more opportunities to connect with their guests and truly enjoy the day. The photographs become more than a record of the ceremony; they tell the story of the people, relationships, and little moments that made the celebration special.

Mike and Katelyn’s wedding was a beautiful reminder that a wedding does not need to be grand to be unforgettable. Sometimes, the most meaningful celebrations are the ones that feel most like home.
